Beth and Shaun Tierney launch Diving Southeast Asia

Following on from the success of Diving the World, which was published in 2006, Footprint Books have recently released their second diving and travel guide book, Diving Southeast Asia.

This guide is a unique fusion of sport and travel and is a truly comparative guide with over 400 popular sites, all of which have been dived, reviewed and photographed by experienced husband-and-wife team, Beth and Shaun Tierney. From the pristine, isolated reefs of Indonesia’s Spice Islands to the lively marine and land environments in The Philippines’ Puerto Galera, there’s something for everyone.

Beth and Shaun say that choosing this region for their second Footprint guide was easy as Southeast Asia is their personal favourite. "After Diving the World was published we were continually asked for more detailed dive travel recommendations and we found we were always saying Bali, the Similans, Borneo and so on. When it was time to start planning a second guide, we conducted several international polls asking divers “if you could dive anywhere in the world, where would that be?” and a clear majority voted for somewhere in Southeast Asia. You can imagine how delighted we were."

The next step was for the authors to go back and research more of the region, focussing on the areas that are most popular yet ensuring that there were options for all levels of diver – from gap-year backpackers who want to learn to dive through to experienced divers in search of an off-the-beaten-track adventure. Different styles of holiday that allow for highly varied budgets are covered off from top-level liveaboards to easy to reach island destinations. The guide has incredible full colour photographs throughout along with personal opinions and anecdotes from experts and other divers, as well as recommendations of what to do and see on dry land.

Diving Papua New Guinea - Milne BayDiving Papua New Guinea - Milne Bay
It is one of the few places left in the world where a diver can see macro critters, pelagics, and big stuff, as well as fantastic soft and hard corals. The often misused and abused adjective “pristine” is actually appropriate here, due to low fishing pressure in the area in comparison to other areas of the Coral Triangle, no dynamite fishing, and thanks to a system implemented by dive resorts whereby local reef "owners" receiving a small fee for every diver that visits "their" reef. As a result elders make sure that the reefs are not fished.
