HMAS Canberra to be scuttled in Victoria - 19 October

It was announced by the Federal Government on Friday that Victoria had been award HMAS Canberra and this ship would scuttled as a new diving wreck for Victoria.

NSW had offered $250,000 to sink the Canberra, but Dr Nelson's office said it was not enough to win the bid.

It will cost $2.8 million to scuttle HMAS Canberra off Barwon Heads near Geelong.

New South Wales also stands to benefit, despite having been the unsuccessful bidder on this occasion for HMAS Canberra. The New South Wales Government will be offered first right to bid for HMAS Adelaide when she is decommissioned in late 2007. HMAS Adelaide is a ship of the same class as the ex-HMAS Canberra.
