info on dive instructor employment

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to these forums. I'm in search of some info on the diving "job market". I'm from Quebec, Canada, and have been to Australia a couple of times, can't seem to get it out of my system. A couple of days ago I bumped into an old buddy who has recently returned from a 16 month trip to australia and he was telling me that there is a demand for french-english speaking dive instructors (in fact he is now a dive instructor and got a job in the bahamas at a club med...did all that in 16 months). If anybody has any comments about this, or knows where I could find more info, it would be appreciated. At this point I'm still a relatively inexperienced diver (about 60 odd dives, all in Australia). But I've been thinking about a serious career change for several years now. I work in front of a computer all day and it's starting to wear real thin, plus I just never could get used to these canadian winters (despite being born here).

Max, I also used to work in front of a computer every day & decided to become a dive instructor 3 years ago. Although I still prefer to be around the sea than in an office, note that as a dive instructor you will work long hours (10hours a day is common) for a very low wage (between 130 AUD to 160 AUD per day). Also your employment is most likely to be casual. No tourist/customers, no jobs.. Also, note that to be a dive instructor is not a long term job & you rarely make a career out of it. And about a demand for French speaking instructors in Australia...... never heard of it. And I also speak french ! There are just a few French speaking tourist coming to Oz. You'd be better off if you'd speak japanese, chinese, Korean or German.

Hi Max, Yes i know dressel divers and my experience with them would lead me to suggest that you stay well clear. Of course as is always the case, i might just have had a bad experience with them. Worked with them for a month and decided very quickly to leave early on as i found them to be unprofessional and dangerous - this wasnt in Australia mind you.

i'm looking for a dm job in northern queensland over summer, early december til late february. i'm australian, so visas aren't an issue, but more than happy to volunteer my services for free diving. if anyone has any leads or info as to where there might be work, it would be greatly appreciated.

Message to Max and Lucy. If you are interested in gertting some diving done and getting some more qualifications to boot then i would recomend trying to get on to the Dive Guide programme with Quicksilver Dive in Port Douglas QLD. Just finishing my three month internship and headding for the IDC next week. Best Diving experience I've had so far.
