Insurance for dive kit - who with??

Hi,

I have a question about insuring my dive equipment whilst in transit to or from home. Does anyone know of a company that will do such insurance while the kit is in my car for example?? A friend back in the UK had there vehicle stolen with 7500 British pounds worth of gear inside. The got the car back, but not the gear. The car insurance policy had a max claim of 1500 GBP.

My dive kit is worth approx AUD$2-3000 to replace new so I obviously want to insure from loss, on a dive boat or when I'm away from the vehicle should my car be broken into etc. I'm with the RAC for the car insurance but the maximum claim for personal effects is around AUD$500. I've seen a US company that will do insurance for them over there, does anyone know of a specialist company for dive kit only, that would also insure for additional items after buying the policy, i.e underwater camera's??

Thanks in advance,

Steve

AAMI insure sporting goods( as an extra against house insurance)including fire, theft, including loss in transit, but do not insure against loss whilst in use. The premium is alittle exy, but not as exy as replacing stolen goods though.

The only bad dive is the one YOU MISSED; take something from every dive,an image to remember it by.

I am insured with GIO as part of my contents insurance, they call it portable valuables, as Peter mentioned it's not cheap but it is covered anywhere in the country as long as it's not in use. You do need to specify each item and it's value, but it's pretty easy!

I'm insured with NRMA and it is the same as RebeccaB it is classed as portable valuables and yet again it is not cheap but when your gear starts to worth over 5000 it is well worth it. When you travel you can also insure your gear but like peter it is not insured when in use.

any questions please e-mail me rmathieson@msn.com

Peter / Robbbie / Rebecca,

Thanks for all your comments, i'll get the insurance done ASAP. For everyone's info, I had an accident recently where the car was towed from Carnarvon to Perth and stored for 2 weeks. I had about $600 of stuff stolen and the RAC said there is no cover for contents of a car. I flew back and brought all my dive kit on the plane so didn't lose of that.

Apparently it is standard that insurance companies don't insure the contents of a vehicle against theft.

Cheers,

Steve

Careful about leaving gear in vehicle if ever at Bass Point NSW...unless you feed that 7ft feral dude some maccas. He keeps an eye out against those trailbikers who smash n' grab. Told two female security do weekdays occassionally for a $1 entry fee. Not bad.
