Drop leg gear pouches
Has anyone ever used a drop leg pouch (such as the one at http://www.copsplus.com/prodnum3289.php - just a random picture that gave me an idea) for carrying gear on dives? Is it practical? I know you have to have dive knives on the inside of your calf to prevent entaglement, would this be the same? I was thinking of a solution to the issue of having camera equipment dangling during a dive. If anyone has any other solutions or suggestions that would be really helpful. Thanks Charlie

I have never used anything like it and in the picture it looks fairly bulky to me. Have you thought of using a (short) bungi cord on one side and a clip on the other to keep the camera close to your chest, but easy to unclip or pull out when you need it.

I don't know if you have any luck yet but I can recommed to you getting a extension clip. This is a bungy cord that clips to your BCD and then has another clip to shorten the length of the cord and a loop so you can attach what ever you want to it. When you want to use your gear you un clip it and the cord extends out so the gear never floats free which is great when using cameras. I purchased mine from deep 6 Colvelly in Sydney and it only costs around $10.00. Highly recommended.

DiveRite sell strap on thigh pockets of this type, more-or-less. I've used them and they work- I'd be a bit cautious about using the ones pictured. Materials that are stiff in air can oftem be floppy in water -- the stiffness of the DR pocket helps getting stuff in and out.
The pockets are designed for use with a trans-pac or harnes and backplate system. I'm not sure how they'd go with a conventional BCD.
A further point to consider is that it makes it a bit more difficult to get a weight belt off in an emergency. The people in the Rescue Diver course had some rude things to say about the pockets.
