Populations of large marine predators such as sharks are in dangerous decline. Recent scientific studies report declines of up to 99% for several shark species such as the oceanic whitetip shark in the Gulf of Mexico. Studies also indicate that the reduction in number of larger coastal species such as bull, hammerhead, and tiger sharks may be as high as 80% in the Atlantic Ocean.
Jagged rocky cliffs towering high above the water, seemingly insurmountable, visible from the numerous look-outs and of course the water. Known for its rich convict history, impressive cliff faces and incredible vistas Tasmania blew us - by now seasoned travellers - out off the water!
To many divers, being in the water with a Great White Shark is definitely one of the most sought after experiences possible on the planet. For some it is the adrenalin rush, for others the experience of witnessing one of the top predators known to men in its natural environment in a safe and controlled manner.
Taken with Canon 300D in Ikelite housing using standard 18-55 lens and single Ikelite 125 strobe. Whilst only a small specimen (looks as if the little fella has just gained it's adult colours) it is still absolutely glorious. He tried to hide in a cave, but I found him. Three shots taken. This one I prefer due to the back lighting and the angle of the fish (the others are a more normal position). Photocomp Feburary '05 - Open
